SCAN ACTIVITIES
The amount of work that SCAN can undertake is dependent on grants that we receive from the local council, membership fees and donations. We need new members to support us in our work, especially those with sensory or physical impairments.One way to make a donation and Support SCAN is when you shop online using the Easy Fundraising site.

Please help SCAN to make a difference in the local community.
Whenever possible, members have attended local area forums where we are pleased to represent the views of people with disabilities on access issues.
Our members have a broad knowledge of access issues and endeavour to share our expertise with the local authority, service providers, and planning & environmental developers, as well as individuals.
Current projects include:
SCAN has had an ongoing project
since 2004 of reviewing the Accessibility of the premises of retailers and service providers in Staines town centre.
The Access Guide booklet that SCAN produced in 2004 has now gone out of print and we are working with local volunteers to collect data for a new booklet. We will also maintain more detailed pages of information on the Access Guide pages of this web site.
We have been attempting to resolve a 'stalemate' with the development of a new pedestrian bridge to Tescos at Sunbury Cross to replace the existing steps and ramps. This has been 'ongoing' for some years. The existing access ramps are unsuitable and unsafe for people with mobility problems and parents with children in pushchairs and prams especially in bad weather.
We have been liaising with the environment agency to improve access over lock gates. Ramps have been provided, but when tested by SCAN members they have proved to be unsuitable for some wheelchairs.
We liaise with other Access Groups across Surrey and work on promoting best practice within the disabled community.
We produce an annual report for our AGM where we list the activities undertaken during the year. These are listed below;
